The growth of the equine auction market: a sector in continuous expansion

Table of Contents

Today we’re going to talk about the characteristics and growth of equine auction sales and participations. We all know how much online marketing has increased and changed the stallion purchasing system, and how easy it is to monitor the performance of the horses themselves.

With a sector in constant growth and development, significant figures have been reached in recent years: in particular, in the last months of 2024, important prices were noted for different breeds of foals, with prices varying significantly according to the sire. For example, at the top of the list is Baltic VDL, with an average auction cost of 36,500 euros for six foals sold. But Heartbreaker’s foals also fetch a considerable sum, around 17,000 euros for nine foals sold. The French stallion Diamant de Samilly, on the other hand, has an average auction price of 15,000 euros for the 14 foals sold. These are just a few figures and, to get a more complete picture, let’s take a closer look at the growth characteristics of this market.

Stallions and show jumpers

If we analyse the sales trends for stallions specifically, it’s clear that the most popular are Cornet Obolenski on the one hand and Casall Ask on the other. The former is certainly destined to become the best stallion in the world: in fact, he is currently in second place in the world ranking of the ten best sires and, in this ranking, he is by far the youngest.

The second, on the other hand, is the sire of 279 approved stallions. He has sired 92 international show jumpers in 160 competitions and 2 Grand Prix dressage horses. For show jumpers, the highest figures were reached in 2018, with a sales record of 22 Lissabons aged three years and over.

1-2 year old horses and foals

A more careful analysis of the price trends of these types of horses from sales at equine auctions in recent years shows that the former were sold for an average of around 490,000 euros. This trend is expected to remain stable in the coming years.

The top of the podium in past years was taken by Fortina Z, sold for 142,000 euros, followed by Emeraude Pommex Z, which went for almost 61,000 euros. In the second category, the standout horse is Presley Girl, who was sold for 45,000 euros, with an average of 12,500 euros per horse.

Embryos sold: some figures from the horse auctions

Embryos sold online are also on the list of the most sought after in recent times, with sales at horse auctions reaching a total of 1,871,500 euros per year. Of course, the value depends exclusively on the nature of the mother, which makes it more difficult to estimate market trends.

A good percentage (11%) of the horses sold were in the price range from 20,000 to 60,000 euros. There were also higher peaks for the purchase of the cross between Emerald and Walnut De Muze.

Foaling Alarm: innovation in the control of equine parturition

In light of the figures summarised above, it is clear that the possibility of controlling the birth of embryos from purebred fillies guarantees the health of the horse itself, but also simplifies and effectively facilitates the complex and delicate work of the veterinarian in charge. Furthermore, given the huge sums paid for embryos, greater control also avoids economic waste due to complications and death during birth.

For these reasons, we at Sisteck offer various systems for monitoring the birth of the mare, useful for completing the pregnancies of your animals in a simple and safe way. In particular, one of our top products is definitely the C6 Evo, which can operate as a direct link in the final stages of pregnancy, which in most cases is at night. This system has a range of 1 kilometre and, at the right moment, sends an alarm via SMS or calls the numbers previously saved in its memory, facilitating the delicate situation of the mare.
